Leadership in Action
January 2012 - April 2014
Leadership in Action (or LIA) is a four-year leadership program at NC State and is put on through the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service. The program goes through the three phases of leadership. Students take a class during their first year called Discover 1 in which they learn everything about how to be a leader, from their personal leadership style to collaboration and problem solving. Students participate in leadership retreats each year. During the second year, students must complete a service project. Students must also complete a number of workshops in order to receive their Visionary Leader Certificate. At the end of the program, students present their projects to peers at a poster session.

During the program, I met with women from the Raleigh area who are making a big impact for our community and state, including NC State Auditor Beth Wood - who was the first ever female state auditor. I also learned a lot about gender-based leadership in the workforce and how women face challenges regarding negotiating for pay and work-family balances.
